Happy Wednesday!

Today we had a terrific day!
In the morning JKs attended gym class, we had snacks and morning circle time.
Next, in language arts JKs worked on beginning sounds. They had to look at the picture in each row and circle the pictures that begin with the same sound as the picture in the box. As you may have noticed we do a lot of activities dealing with beginning sounds. The ability to recognize that words are made up or begin with individual sounds is essential to success in learning to read. At SJA we try to build a good foundation in JK based on phonemes.
I found this chart a while ago and it is an easy way for parents to understand what does it mean to develop 'phonemic awareness'.

Today we had to do reading buddies in the morning (instead of afternoon) and then we headed to the cafeteria to have lunch.
After recess, JKs had French class and we did a math activity dealing with language of probability, which is part of our data management unit. The goal for this activity was to teach JKs that information and events can be compared according to the language of probability. What is certain? What is possible? What is impossible? Find out what events are likely, unlikely or equally likely to occur. We will be using the same vocabulary/language when doing our science experiment this Friday and throughout the next week.
Next we completed a math activity dealing with MORE or LESS. JKs had to look and compare wich picture showed LESS.
After second lunch and recess we had centers.

While JKs were engaged in centers, I called them one by one to complete a reflection of their learning in term 1. This reflection sheet will be added to their IB Portfolio, which you will have the chance to take a look at the Parent Student Teacher interviews.
The IB Portfolio remains at school until your child leaves SJA. For every Unit of Inquiry the teacher and students will add samples of their work reflecting their learning and areas for improvement.
*Our Christmas board looks great!

Have a great evening everyone!
*Our favourite 'brain break' song!
