Hands on Learning!

In and out of the classroom, young children learn best when they are actively involved. As they play, explore, experiment and interact with people and objects, children are always trying to make sense of those experiences. Children under age 7 are most comfortable in the concrete world they see, smell, hear, taste and touch. Here are some fun activities you can do with your child at home.

Happy Wednesday

Today we began the day with gym class, snacks, calendar time and music class.
After music class, we sang our phonics song and practiced writing the uppercase and lowercase E.
After lunch and recess we talked about happy and sad teeth. JKs helped me making a list of foods that will make your teeth happy and a list of foods that will make your teeth sad.
Then to observe if students understood this activity they had to cut and paste healthy foods and non healthy foods into the happy and sad tooth.
Next we completed an activity dealing with numeracy from 1-20. JKs cut out pumpkins with numbers and glued them in correct order.
After recess we had centers.

Happy Tuesday!

We had a great day!
In the morning we had gym class, snacks and circle time (calendar, weather, songs...).
Next, as part of our UOI, we had a especial guest coming from the Dairy Framers of Ontario.
We talked about health eating, benefits of milk products and how cow gives us milk.

 

In the afternoon we had French class and language. In language we met a new animal friend: Ellie Elephant. We then sang our phonics song for the letter E.

Next we did Es using play dough. Then we worked on beginning sounds for the letters T, S and M. JKs cut out the pictures and glued them under the correct beginning letter sound. This is a great activity to increase their phonetic awareness as well as their fine motor skills.

After second lunch and recess we had reading buddies and centers. For centers today JKs used numeracy puzzles and math manipulatives in order to practice 1:1 correspondence.
1:1 correspondence is crucial to learn as it is used in our every day lives. Most children can rote count fairly easily, however this demonstrates memory and not the understanding of concept of quantity.
We will continue practicing 1:1 correspondence throughout the year.

Happy International Day

Dear parents, sorry for not posting yesterday, I forgot my laptop and camera at school.
What an incredible day we had yesterday! To see my students' enthusiasm about the International Day was really rewarding!
This is an event so close to my heart which I started 5 years ago. Mississauga is such a multicultural city and we can all learn from each others cultures and background. Thank you all parents for your money contribution. In total we had $70. We spent $50 in spring rolls and $20 in sweets (rice cookies and crispy egg roll wafer).
We mostly focused on the International day yesterday but students still had their specialists classes (Gym, French and Music).
